Simulation of diesel-injection with smoothed particle hydrodynamics

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a grid-free numerical particle method for the simulation of the compressible flow of gases and fluids. The SPH-Method provides a numerical algorithm for solving a system of coupled partial differential equations for continuous field magnitudes. The method transfers this system of equations to a system of coupled common differential equations for magnitudes at discrete sampling points, the locations of the SPH-particles. At our institute this method was expanded to permit the simulation of problems with free surfaces and several implementations of the SPH-method were developed to simulate several astrophysical phenomena as well as the injection of diesel. Due to the great requirements on computing power for such simulations a Linux cluster with 256 CPUs has been developed and installed at our institute within the special field of research SFB 382 (procedures and algorithms for the simulation of physical processes on maximum performance computers) of the DFG. A special field of interest is the parallelisation of the method on this distributed memory architecture which is mostly done by the institute of technical informatics at our university.
